A Missing Piece

For quite a few years now, most of my working life, I have been a photographer. Staying creatively open over time takes effort — curiosity does not look after itself. The answer, for me, has always been community, and the freedom to simply play.

For many years I have also been part of Northampton Open Media, a local nonprofit that does far more than run a community TV station. Alongside broadcasting city meetings and local content, NOM helps people tell their stories across almost any visual medium — through trainings, gear rentals, grants, and events like Crowdsource Cinema and Film Sprints. Being part of that has been a good thing.

Photography never quite had a home within it. That gap sat with me for a while. Eventually I reached out to Kevin, a fellow photographer, and asked if he wanted to start something together. He was on board right away. That was the stepping stone I needed.

Wandering Lens is what grew from that. A space within NOM for people curious about exploring the world through a lens — no professional expectations, no agenda beyond seeing and sharing.

I don’t know exactly where this goes, and I think that is part of what makes it interesting. What I am looking forward to is who we meet along the way, and what people make when given the space to just make photographs.

The images below are from our very first session. It begins here.
