October: Seasonal Change / Friendship

October brought a great group together to talk all things photography, and we were happy to welcome a few new faces this month.

Before sharing photos, we took a closer look at image composition: the deliberate arrangement of visual elements within the frame to guide the viewer’s eye and carry the feeling of an image. We walked through the main building blocks. Placement is where the subject sits, whether on the rule of thirds, centered, or along the golden ratio. Balance is how visual weight is distributed. Leading lines, diagonals, and curves create direction and flow. Framing and cropping decide what is in and what is out. Foreground, middle ground, and background build depth. Contrast, scale, repetition, and negative space shape how the elements relate to each other.

This month’s themes were Seasonal Change and Friendship. With nature shifting all around us as it gets ready for winter, there was no shortage of beautiful spots to photograph, and it showed in the images everyone brought. Friendship, as a more emotional subject, turned out to be trickier to capture, and that made for some good conversation about how to photograph something you feel rather than something you see.
